Medieval days in Ter Apel (NL) on September 1st and 2nd 2012
Visit the main and most authentic Medieval event in the
Netherlands on September 1st and 2nd and be tastefully
surprised.
This year's theme is: "the flavours of the Middle
Ages"
Groningen is named Capital of Taste of 2011. All year long, the
city and province of Groningen will propagate tasty food. The theme
of all activities will be: "healthy and fair food, with a pure
taste" and has its accent on regional products. There will be
plenty of opportunities for you to experience the taste of long
gone times. Taste, smell, see and participate!
Around the Medieval monastery in the middle of the Ter Apel
forest, you will experience the Middle Ages as never before.
With a lot of international groups, many artisans and market
people, this event is known as the most impressive and authentic
15th century gathering in the Netherlands. Apart from the battle
between the different armies, archery demonstrations and sword
fighting demonstrations, there is a lot to see around the
monastery, in the forest and at the pub. Every minute you will be
entertained with music, stories, acrobats and much more. Enjoy the
fairy-like illuminated monastery on Saturday evening, in and around
the pub, in an atmosphere you will never experience again. Of
course there will be music and dance around a large camp fire the
evening.
During daytime, there are guided tours in the monastery. In the
evening there is a concert.
Children
Also for the kids, there is a lot to enjoy and to do; a team of
enthusiastic volunteers is ready to play medieval games with them
and there are workshops for kids. For your family, the Medieval
days are a unique chance to experience living history a whole day
long.
Welcome to Westerwolde
Westerwolde, of which Ter Apel is a part, was an almost forgotten
and very isolated region on dry grounds between the swamps in the
Middle Ages.
Monastery
Jacobus Wilting, pastor in Garrelsweer and vicar in Loppersum,
granted his settlement Apell to the Order of the Holy Cross [Ordo
Sanctae Crucis] in 1464, under the condition that a monastery would
be built on this place.
The monastery of Ter Apel is the only rural monastery left in the
northwest of Europe.
It belongs to the UNESCO "top 100" of immovable objects in the
Netherlands since 1992 and a visit of the building is worthwhile!
